What is SEO and Why is it Important?

SEO, or Search Engine Optimisation, is one of those little necessaries that you’ll need if you want your website to be found on the organic search results pages (SERPs). Firstly, let’s start by explaining who these ‘search engines’ are, and why they play such a big role in helping you generate more traffic, more sales, more conversions, more likes, more of everything to your website. Search Engines, such as Google, Bing, or Yahoo are designed in such a way, that it makes it easier for people to find your business online, without needing to know your website URL (or web IP). So, this means that if someone/a customer in Auckland has a particular product or service in mind, let’s say an All Blacks Rugby Ball, that person/customer can simply pop the keyword phrase “All Blacks Rugby Ball” into the search engine, and there you have it, a list of potential companies that sell All Blacks Rugby Balls will pop up! Now, to have your website “pop up” in these search engines, doesn’t just happen. There is a lot of hard-work and a fair bit of “ Google massaging” required to put your business on what we like to call “the digital high-street”. Your website is the only person (unless you have a team that is out of this world) that will work for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It’s there, presenting your products, presenting your unique selling points (USPs), explaining to people, selling to people, and helping people to make more informed decisions about your product or service. It’s there, doing the stuff you can’t do, while you’re sleeping. So, it makes sense to figure out a way of making your “top sales person” or your most “knowledgeable employee” to be right there, walking around the digital high-street, telling people about your products or services. This is where SEO comes in and this is why SEO is so important for small New Zealand businesses. It means you can compete on the global stage. It means you pack a bigger punch, it means you can have all the benefits of renting space on the most expensive street (where the majority of customers will be walking), without paying any rent. Now, we have to note that Google loves to change its ‘tastes’ every now and then, so there is a particular (evolving) recipe that we use to ensure your business is right there, on the first page, telling people why they should pop in and have look in your shop. This recipe isn’t as straight-forward as you think, and this means you’ll need to write a lot of content, use an SEO expert (who can speak the language of Google), mark-up this content, and create rich-data that Google can easily understand, crawl, index. It also means you’ll need tools like Google Analytics to monitor your keyword performance the entire way through your SEO journey. SEO takes time (usually around 3 – 4 months) before you can see results, but it’s worth it! Having an effective SEO strategy is one of the fundamental elements of the digital marketing mix. It not only means your business can be found organically in the SERPs, but it can also result in a better page-rank, which in turn leads to a better quality-score (for Google AdWords), which ultimately, will give you better bang-for-your-buck when you start those somewhat costly Google AdWords campaigns!
